Return to Azure Web Server, Azure Web Services - Azure Web Apps, Web Servers, Load Balancers
IIS (Internet Information Services) is a flexible, secure, and manageable web server from Microsoft that is used to host websites and web applications. Introduced with Windows NT 4.0 in 1996, IIS has been a fundamental part of Microsoft's web technology stack, supporting HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, SMTP, and NNTP. It is designed to work seamlessly with the Windows operating system and integrates closely with other Microsoft services and software, including ASP.NET for web application development, Windows Authentication, and PowerShell for automation and management. IIS provides a graphical user interface for server management, but it can also be managed programmatically via scripts. Over the years, IIS has evolved through several versions, enhancing its security features, performance, and scalability to support the needs of modern web applications. It is widely used in enterprise environments and is suitable for hosting everything from small to large-scale web applications.
