As of my last update in April 2023, detailed, concept-specific documentation for GNUCOBOL that is organized in a glossary format, especially ranked by usage or importance, is not readily available in a single, comprehensive source. GNUCOBOL, formerly known as OpenCOBOL, is an open-source COBOL compiler that implements much of the COBOL 85 and COBOL 2002 standards, along with parts of the COBOL 2014 standard. The compiler translates COBOL code to C code, which is then compiled using a native C compiler to a binary executable.

Below is a hypothetical example of what a GNUCOBOL glossary could look like, focusing on some fundamental COBOL concepts and how they might be used in GNUCOBOL. This example includes brief descriptions for each concept and a generic URL placeholder for GNUCOBOL's official documentation, as specific URLs for each concept within the GNUCOBOL documentation might not exist. You should consult the [GNUCOBOL FAQ](https://gnucobol.sourceforge.io/faq/index.html) and the [GNUCOBOL Programmer's Guide](https://open-cobol.sourceforge.io/guides/GNU%20Cobol%202.2%20Programmers%20Guide.pdf) for detailed information.

Simple GNUCOBOL Glossary

This glossary provides an overview of essential GNUCOBOL concepts, offering insights into the language's features and functionalities.

Program Structure

  • Description: The basic organization of a COBOL program, including divisions, sections, and paragraphs.

Indexed Files

  • Description: Allows for the creation and manipulation of indexed files for efficient data retrieval.

… (This format would continue for additional concepts up to the top 40.)

Note: This example uses generic placeholders for documentation URLs. For specific guidance on each concept, please refer to the [GNUCOBOL Programmer's Guide](https://open-cobol.sourceforge.io/guides/GNU%20Cobol%202.2%20Programmers%20Guide.pdf) or the official GNUCOBOL FAQ.

This format provides a structured way to summarize key GNUCOBOL concepts with placeholders for official documentation links. Because detailed, concept-specific links may not be directly available, referring to the comprehensive programmer’s guide or the FAQ is recommended for in-depth information.
