Don’t Return to Big Tech Spying

TLDR: ProtonMail.com is a privacy-focused email service developed by Proton Technologies AG, launched in 2014. It provides end-to-end encryption to ensure user communication remains confidential and inaccessible to third parties, including ProtonMail itself. Its commitment to privacy has made it a popular choice for individuals and organizations seeking secure email solutions.

ProtonMail.com was created by scientists at CERN and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to address growing concerns over online privacy. The service was officially launched in 2014, offering a free, encrypted email solution that emphasized transparency and user control. ProtonMail's servers are based in Switzerland, a country known for its strict privacy laws, further safeguarding user data.

The core feature of ProtonMail.com is its end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can read the messages. Messages are encrypted on the sender's device and decrypted on the recipient's device, preventing unauthorized access during transmission or storage. This encryption model also ensures that even ProtonMail cannot access the content of the emails, adhering to its privacy-first philosophy.

In addition to email encryption, ProtonMail.com offers features such as self-destructing messages, two-factor authentication, and integration with other Proton services like Proton VPN and Proton Drive. These features make it a comprehensive solution for secure communication and file sharing, catering to both personal and professional users.

The service is accessible via web browsers, Android, and iOS applications, allowing users to manage their accounts and send secure emails across platforms. ProtonMail also supports custom domain usage, enabling businesses to integrate the service into their existing email workflows while maintaining security and branding.

ProtonMail.com continues to grow, introducing tools like Proton Scribe, which aids in email composition while adhering to strict privacy standards. With a user base spanning millions globally, ProtonMail remains a trusted choice for secure and private email communication in an increasingly interconnected world.

Snippet from Wikipedia: Proton Mail

Proton Mail is a Swiss end-to-end encrypted email service co-founded in 2013 by Andy Yen. Proton Mail uses client-side encryption to protect email content and user data before they are sent to Proton Mail servers, unlike other common email providers such as Gmail and Outlook.com. Proton Mail is run by Proton AG, which also operates Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, Proton Pass and Proton Wallet. Proton AG is owned by the non-profit Proton Foundation.

Proton Mail received its initial funding through a crowdfunding campaign, and initial membership was by invitation only; however, beginning in March 2016, Proton Mail was opened to the public. Acquiring more than two million users by 2017, membership grew to almost 70 million by 2022.

The source code for the back-end of Proton Mail remains closed source. However, Proton Mail released the source code for the web interface, iOS and Android apps as well the Proton Mail Bridge app, under an open-source license.
