Alpaca is a variant of Meta's LLaMa model, created by researchers at Stanford University. It was introduced in March 2023 and is a conversational AI chatbot that uses LLaMa's 7-billion-parameter model. The researchers fine-tuned the model with 52,000 instruction-following demonstrations at a cost of only $600. The code and research for Alpaca were open-sourced, which significantly contributed to the democratization of LLMs and spurred rapid innovation within the open-source community [1] [2].
