Controlled Opposition
See: Limited hangout
Controlled opposition refers to a situation where a group or individual, perceived as opposing the status quo or dominant power structures, is actually being manipulated or controlled by those very entities they appear to challenge. This strategy is often used to divert attention, co-opt dissent, or neutralize threats by creating a facade of opposition while maintaining control over the narrative.
Etymology
The term “controlled opposition” combines “controlled,” derived from the Latin “contrarotulare,” meaning “to check or regulate,” and “opposition,” which comes from the Latin “oppositio,” meaning “a setting against.” Together, it describes opposition that is managed or manipulated by those in power to serve their own interests.
