FT8

FT8 is a digital communication mode used in amateur radio and other radio communication applications, developed by Joe Taylor, K1JT, and Steve Franke, K9AN, as part of the WSJT-X software suite. Introduced in 2017, FT8 stands for “Franke-Taylor design, 8-FSK modulation.” It employs a form of frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation with 8 tones, enabling fast and efficient data transmission over radio frequencies. FT8 operates with a highly structured protocol and fixed message formats, allowing for rapid exchange of information with minimal operator intervention. It is characterized by its robustness and sensitivity, making it suitable for communication under weak signal conditions, particularly on the high-frequency (HF) bands where propagation conditions may be challenging. FT8 has gained popularity among amateur radio operators for its ability to facilitate contacts over long distances with minimal power and antenna requirements, as well as its suitability for automated or semi-automated operation using computer software.
