Lineage
See Six lineages
“Because America is a relatively new country, it doesn’t have a long history. Because Americans don’t have a long history, they don’t respect lineage and are actually proud of not depending on a lineage. But it is not possible to learn anything without depending on a lineage.
In America, because children do not learn respect for lineage, they feel free to insult and dishonor their parents and teachers. They have the freedom to publicly criticize and even slander the people who taught them and who were kind to them. Even if parents made mistakes, children should still respect them, since they gave them a precious human birth. Even if teachers made mistakes, students should still respect them, since they taught them the point of view of what is wrong and right in order to increase their intelligence. If they respect parents and teachers, then when they become parents and teachers, they can benefit children or students in future generations by keeping the lineage of noble qualities.
In America, there are many students and teachers from the Buddhist tradition who also don’t understand or respect lineage. Actually, all teaching comes from unbroken lineage and all wisdom qualities come from teaching, from the student honoring and respecting the teacher through love and devotion.” — A Brief Fantasy History of a Himalayan - Autobiographical Reflections by Thinley Norbu
